At the Viking Village, we have a truly special smoke sauna!

The smoke sauna building was constructed on the site of an old sauna and comes with a powerful legend. The sauna is located about 100 meters from the main Viking house, right on the banks of the Pirita River. It’s tucked away privately in the forest, offering your group a peaceful escape to enjoy both nature and sauna pleasures.

The lower floor of the sauna house features a spacious lounge with a large table that seats 14–15 people. The smoke sauna bench accommodates up to 10 people at once, and of course, traditional whisking is welcome here.

The sauna includes a proper shower room with two showers, and for a refreshing dip, you can head down a sturdy staircase to the Pirita River.

No need to worry about getting dirty from soot—we always clean the bench after heating and cover it with clean sheets for your comfort.

If your sauna evening stretches late, there’s no need to head home—on the second floor of the smoke sauna house, there are sleeping places for up to 11 people. It’s a cozy way to spend the night and start your next day refreshed.

You can also rent a hot tub located on the terrace for an additional fee. (Some mistakenly call it a barrel sauna.) We’ll heat it to a perfect 38–40°C at your requested time, and from there, you can maintain the temperature yourself.

Next to the sauna is a covered outdoor area—perfect for chatting and enjoying drinks in the fresh air instead of sitting inside. Guests can also use the grill or order food directly from the Viking Village tavern.

We recommend bringing:

Flip-flops, a sauna hat, a whisk, an extra towel, personal washing supplies, and a good mood!

NB! The smoke sauna is heated and ready at a pre-agreed time and cannot be reheated later. The smoke sauna stove provides strong, lively steam for 3–4 hours after heating.

What makes our Smoke Sauna special?

  1. In addition to the traditional smoke sauna stove, the steam room is equipped with a special Saunum heater featuring a patented air circulation system combined with Himalayan salt balls. This creates an exceptionally soft and even temperature and well-ionized air, which is beneficial for your respiratory system and skin.
  2. Our experiential sauna allows for special sauna rituals, where different sauna customs and traditions are introduced. You can book a sauna master to guide the ritual, accompanied by traditional runic songs and shamanic drumming. Watch the fun video.
  3. We have also used jadeite sauna stones, one of the most highly valued sauna stones in the world. In folk wisdom, jadeite is known as a stabilizing, healing stone associated with negative air ions, believed to increase vitality, balance the body’s energy field, and calm the mind.
  4. The smoke sauna is built with an external heating system, which significantly improves air quality in the steam room.
  5. The sauna construction uses exceptionally unique materials, including 300-million-year-old wood, distinctive Viking symbols, and many other fascinating details that should be experienced in person.

The Viking Village saunas are members of the Saunatee Association.

Saunatee’s mission is to preserve and promote Estonian sauna culture so that future generations will continue to value sauna traditions. Saunatee introduces authentic Estonian sauna customs while also offering new and unique sauna experiences.

The smoke sauna is a true example of Estonia’s centuries-old sauna tradition, allowing guests to enjoy sauna rituals just as our ancestors did. The Võrumaa smoke sauna tradition has been added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
